what are some interesting facts about Sacajawea (Sacagawea)?
Sacajawea was a member of the Shoshone tribe. She was captured at the age of 12 and eventually sold into slavery to a French-Canadian trader, Toussaint Charbonneau. H emarried her and took her with him in 1804-6 when, as interpreter, he joined the US transscontinental expedition led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark.
She was the only woman on the expedition and proved an invaluable guide, especially when they reached the upper Missouri River and the mountains where she had grown up. when they encountered other Native American tribes, Sacajawea, who was carrying her infant son on her back, allayed their hostility, and hlped to negotiate for horses and guides. Her participation was vitaul to the success of the expedition, which established an American presence in the Pacific northwest, and her fortitude in the face of much hardship has raised her to folkloric status.
Some historians claim that she did not die in 1812, but that a missionary met her in 1875 and she actually died in 1884.
