Appreciating Architectural Engineering in Paris, France by Robert Emdur
Paris is the capital city of France and one of the most famous cities in the world. As one of the world's leading business and cultural centres, it is brimming with art and history. On every inch of the banks of the Seine, stunning architectural marvels stand at attention and beg to be gazed upon. With so many architecturally important structures, it is a perfect place for university trips that focus on architecture, construction and engineering. While in the city, be sure to take time to visit the Eiffel Tower, the Grande Arche at La Defense, and the Grand Palais.
The Eiffel Tower -- The Eiffel Tower, or the 'Iron lady', has become one of the most recognizable structures in the world; though when it was first built it was considered an eyesore. The tower was built between 1887-1889 as an entryway to the 1900 World's Fair, marking the centennial of the French Revolution. Named after its designer and engineer, Gustave Eiffel, the tower was built with over 18,000 pieces of iron held together by 2.5 million rivets. University trips to the tower will encourage students to head up to the top where they can see how the tower was designed - with the original brief of being 'easily dismantled' in mind. However, as the structure proved useful as a communication tower, it was allowed to stand past its original 20-year permit to become an icon of architecture.
The Grande Arche at La Defense -- Much like the Eiffel Tower, the Grande Arche at La Defense is a stunning work of architecture and engineering that stands high in the Paris skyline. University trips to the city will take students to the western part of Paris where the modern interpretation of the Arc de Triomphe stands like a striking cube against the skies. In 1982 a national competition was announced - with the winning entry by Danish architect Johann Otto von Spreckelsen and Danish engineer Erik Reitzel. The Cube stands at 110 metres high, 108 metres wide, and has a depth of 112 metres. It was opened with military parades and celebrations that marked the 1989 bicentennial celebration of the French Revolution. The Grande Arche at La Defense is home to government buildings and offers an amazing view over the business district of Paris.
The Grand Palais -- University trips to experience the architectural and engineering feats of Paris will certainly take students to see the two buildings designed by Henri Deglane, Albert Louvet, and Albert Thomas under the supervision of Charles Girault. The Grande Palais was begun in 1887, along with the Petit Palais across the road, as part of the preparations for the World's Fair of 1900. The building was designed in the Beaux-Arts architectural style and reflects the movement's tastes of stone facades and formal floor plans. The innovative use of the glass vaults, ironworks, and reinforced concrete made the The Grand Palais an engineering wonder. The glass roof is so spectacular that the whole building has been classed as an historical monument.
