Why use a quarter rest after a quarter note instead of just using a half note?

I am learning to read standard music notation and can't understand why, in a time signature of 4/4, notes in a single measure are written as: quarter, quarter, quarter rest, quarter. Would it be the same thing if it was written as: quarter, half, quarter?

That's not the same thing because the note should be held for its fraction of the measure. The type of note indicates duration. So if it was a half note, there would be no pause. Good question... It shows you're engaged with learning.
