Diamonds are specifically renowned as a material with superlative physical qualities such as their hardness and brilliance. A diamond's gem quality, which is not as dependent on material properties as industrial applications, has invited both imitation and the invention of procedures to enhance the gemological properties of natural diamonds. Some of these procedures make the diamond appear bigger but greatly reduce the sparkle and other positive qualities of the diamond. Nevertheless a diamond is commonly cut and polished to produce a high appearance of these qualities. Borazon, ultra hard fullerite, or aggregated diamond nanorods, enables a diamond to hold a polish extremely well and retain their lustre.
The production and distribution of diamonds is largely consolidated in the hands of a few key players, and concentrated in traditional diamond trading centers. In contrast to precious metals, there is no universal world price per gram for diamonds. Unless you are a trained jeweler you will not have the ability to determine if the quality of the diamond is matched to its purchase price. As diamonds in larger sizes become increasingly rare and valuable, any easily visible and readily understood pricing system has been hard to establish. Some of the price jumps are related to marketing and consumer expectations rather than their intrinsic value. Diamonds are expensive and knowledge is needed to make a wise buy that will retain or even increase in value over time.
