The Bald Eagle No Longer Endangered by Ryan Orlancia
Many Americans feared the extinction of their national symbol, but the bald eagle has been slowing growing in numbers and largely recovered from its earlier decline. The Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act was passed in 1940 to keep the bird from being hunted after the bald eagle was found to be endangered. Another danger to the bird was the spread of DDT, which continued to kill eagles even after the hunters stopped. The bald eagle was included on the endangered species list in 1973, and the species hit a low point in 1963 with only 417 breeding pairs.
The bald eagle has defied the predictions of extinction, raising their numbers dramatically over the past few decades. The bald eagle is no longer listed as an endangered species thanks to the nearly 10,000 pairs that roam the American skies. Wildlife experts, however, will not be abandoning the bald eagle. Over the next five years or so, the number of bald eagles will be closely monitored. If at any time the eagle's numbers begin to decline, there is the possibility of the animal being relisted on the endangered species list for continuing protection.
The Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act will continue to protect the bald eagle even as it stays off the endangered species list. The Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918 has offers still more protection to the bald eagle. This act made hunting the bald eagle, as well as other migratory birds, illegal in the United States and in certain other countries. For eagles that make their way into Canada or Mexico, the treaty is in effect in those countries to stop the trade of eagle feathers, eggs and other parts that could make the hunting of eagles lucrative.
Bald eagles have been further protected by the 1972 federal ban on DDT. The toxic chemical penetrated the entire food chain, resulting in the deaths of eagles as well as many other bird species. The pesticide washed from the fields to the waterways and eventually into bald eagles. The fish in these waterways became contaminated and were then eaten by bald eagles. The affected eagles were unable to produce eggshells that were hard enough to keep from cracking before the incubation period was over. The reproduction of the species was severely hampered when eagles accidentally cracked their eggs while caring for them. Today the threat of DDT is largely over and bald eagles can catch fish, roam the skies and keep increasing their numbers.
