This is a difficult question to answer without knowing more details about the situation so this is only a best guess shot at giving you some possibility. When the die cracks, the conductors and insulators that are constructed on the die are displaced. Some may form short circuits or near-short circuits that cause the leakage currents to increase. Depending on what voltages are involved, it could cause high leakage currents to exist in parts of the circuits even when the chip itself is suppose to be in standby mode or even turned off. I am surprised that a chip with a cracked die would even still work at all unless it is a very small crack.
