How To Hoard Copper Pennies - The right way
How to Hoard Copper PenniesMay 9th, 2011Written by: Kreg KhemmoroIf you are buzzing here it should now be somewhat apparent that copper monetary worth is on the rise. Collecting or hoarding copper pennies can be a viable way to compete with inflation, but there's a catch. Somewhat common knowledge is that copper pennies were made 1982 and before. Although it may seem that easy to distinguish a zinc penny from a copper penny, you must realize that its not. So I wrote this article to help those who are interested in how to tell the difference between copper and zinc pennies. NOTE: Please read the whole article before you begin hoarding copper pennies.Step 1Gather potential hoarding materials. Go to your local bank or credit union and request rolls of pennies.Pennies generally come in rolls of 50 cents, and jars containing 50 rolls or $25. If the request is going to exceed $50 than you may want to put in an order with your bank at the beginning of the week to make sure they will have the pennies on hand. Some believe you should ask your bank teller for customer rolls as opposed to those from the Federal Reserve because they tend to have more copper per roll, but I am not a part of this bandwagon. In our experience at Copper Penny Connection the average amount of copper pennies per roll is around 16 whether they be customer rolls or ones fresh out of the Federal Reserve. The decision is yours to make.Step 2Obtain 2 bins to contain both your copper and zinc pennies. Make sure your bins are accordingly proportional to how many pennies you plan on purchasing from your bank. Also try to get something really wide or really tall. Just make sure that it takes up a good amount of space or volume. That way the weight will be more well distrubitued and therefore it will be a little easier to move when necessary.Step 3This is where it gets interesting and a little fun depending on your attention span. Let the copper hoarding begin! There are a few ways you can do this, I started out by hand sorting every penny and using a scale that weighs to gram measurement. You see zinc pennies typically weigh around 2.5 - 2.6 grams and copper pennies weigh in at about 3.0 - 3.1 grams. The scale is very useful when you are debating whether a 1982 penny is copper or not. As I'm sure you've figured out this can be very tidious and redundant. Option 2 is purchasing an intermediate coin sorter and having it do most of the tidious and redundant work for you. You can purchase a very simple coin sorter on ebay for around $40 but you will there still a descent amount of manual labor to be done and the turnover rate is pretty limited. Your final option and the most appealing (and probably the most expensive too) is purchasing a Rydale Coin Sorter. The price is a little steep but the machinery is brilliant and you can sort up to 18,000 pennies in one hour! It's a worth while investment in my opinion.Step 4Returning your zinc pennies. Depending on who you are using your local CoinStar may seem to be the most convenient way to handle your massive undertaking of zinc pennies but hear this. Unless you are planning to buy a gift card or donate your money to charity (yeah right thats why were all doing this) than you will pay .09 to every dollar CoinStar counts. Not my favorite idea becuase I dont like losing money!! Some people actually take the time to re-roll thier zinc pennies and take them back to the bank. I can see how this would be a good choice if you bought an automatic coin roller for $10 from Wal-Mart or something. You may want to carefully unwrap your pennies during Step 2 so that you can reuse the wrappers. Again, not my favorite choice. You might be asking what is my favorite choice then, right? Well I dont want to promote any big banks, so I wont 
But some big banks have Free Coin return machines inside local branches which don't charge you a fee if you are a customer of that bank. So just do what I did, opened an account and just return my pennies there.Step 5Get your money back and get more copper pennies. Then repeat steps 2 - 5. Have fun everyone and happy hoarding!
