Carnaval La Paz 2012 From February 16 through February 21 by Martin Seaman

Carnaval La Paz 2012 From February 16 through February 21 our city hosts the biggest event in Baja, Carnaval La Paz. This years theme is Myths, Legends and Personalities. The Malecon will be closed to traffic beginning Wednesday. February 15 as street vendors and amusement ride make final preparations. La Paz Carnaval is different from Carnaval in Rio or New
orleans. For those who have never attended, it would best be described as a Mexican street fair with a parade. Very popular among the teen crowd, the streets will be filled with people of all ages sampling the food and beverage vendors, buying blankets, work of local artisans and Carnaval trinkets. Carnaval La Paz has a long history and is one of the most popular Carnaval locations in all of Mexico. This year look for Azul Marino's food both near the foot of Cinco de Mayo. Azul Marino is one of the popular restaurants located in Pueblo Marinero overlooking the marina. The parade
days are Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, the final three days of Carnaval. Look for CostaBaja's participation with a float commemorating Sir Francis Drake, who explored parts of Baja in the late 1500's.

4 Lanes Connecting La Paz and Los Cabos After nearly 5 years of construction the 4 lane expansion of Mexico Highway 1 and 19 between La Paz and Cabo San Lucas is nearing completion. CostaBaja's Alejandro Yberri (CostaBaja's CEO) and Arturo Pea (Director of Operations) were invited guests to hear Mexican President Felipe Caldern dedication event for the new highway in Los Cabos. The investment by the Federal Mexican government of nearly $950 million pesos (about 70 million dollars) will be completed later this year. The work expands the roadway to 4 lanes and has bridged all the arroyos along the 90 mile route. The improvement of this important transportation artery will make travel between La Paz and Los Cabos far safer and accommodate the increased number commercial and passenger. Access to the Los Cabos airport will be even easier and faster. With all the new bridges along the route the days of road closures following heavy summer rains will
be history.

Whale Watching Season in Baja The winter months are the peak time for whale watching in Baja and this year folks are seeing more whales than have been seen in several years in the breeding estuaries of the Pacific coast of Baja
Sur. Whale watching expeditions are available from Fun Baja, located on the property in Marina CostaBaja. One and two day safaris are available that journey overland to Puerto Lopez Mateo in Magdalena Bay. Then guests board a super panga to get close enough to touch these gentle giants of the Sea in their natural habitat. For winter visitors to the peninsula it is a 'must see' and an experience neither young or old will ever forget. Gray whales are sometimes sighted right here in the Bay of La Paz by visitors out to enjoy the Whale Shark and Sea Lion tours also offered by Fun Baja. For

how much would an 1872 peso worth? Not as in US currency, but for the silver content, etc.?

I was going thru a relatives belongings that was left to me. I came across a baggie of old silver pesos....one peso, cinco pesos...dated 1872-1959.
I don't know what to do with the or if they are worth anything. Please help.

The Mexico 1872 Peso (with the Balance Scale design) contains about .78 troy ounces of silver. That particular type has a nice collectible value, too. A really nice one would sell for $50 or more. To give you a more accurate assessment, I would need to know the condition of the coin and the letters on each side of the date - those are the mint mark and mint master's initial. Mo 1872 M would be Mexico City Mint, mint master M.
Just be careful. I have been seeing a lot of that particular date Peso coin being sold at my local swap meet. Those are all fakes, and the ones I have seen contain no silver (and they are all Mo M). A real coin weighs about 27 grams. these Chinese-made fakes run about 21 grams. Some of the other fake Mexican coins I see at the swap meet include the 1882 Zs JS (Zacatecas mint) 8 Reales (Same size as a US Silver dollar).
