Help Nurture Our Future as an Early Childhood Educator by Jason white

Did you know that employment for teachers, including those in early childhood education, is expected to grow by 13 percent between 2008 and 2018, with particular demand expected in urban areas? Now is a great time to get into this field that specializes in the instruction of children from birth to age eight. Although the term â€early childhood educator†typically refers to a teacher, it can also be applied to teacher assistants, specialists, and administrators. The responsibilities of these early childhood educators depend on the children’s age. For example, teachers of young children create lesson plans, administer discipline and evaluate progress of students, emphasizing the aspects considered crucial to successful physical, cognitive and emotional development. The one thing that all of these professionals have in common is a post-secondary education such as Centennial College’s Early Childhood Education program.

This two-year undertaking is conducted out of the college’s Progress Campus, which is centrally located and ideal for networking. In order to apply, students must present at minimum an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent or be 19 years of age or older. In addition they must have completed the compulsory English 12C or U or skills assessment, or equivalent. English proficiency will also be considered in the admissions process.

During their time in the Early Childhood Education program, students participate in courses such as The Healthy Development of the Whole Child, Guidance and the Individual Child, Health and Wellbeing of Young Children, Principles of Psychology, Understanding and Communicating with Families, and many more. As you can see, the focus of the program is very clearly on the child. That’s because the first priority of Centennial Early Childhood Educators is to provide high standards of quality care to children and their families. In addition these in-school courses, the ECE program at Centennial College’s Progress Campus offers a field placement. This gives the students a chance to apply what they have learned, and encounter situations that they will most likely experience upon graduation. Please note that in order to complete the field placement you must: have an annual clear police check with vulnerable sector screening and obtain a valid first aid and CPR certificates (prior to the beginning of second semester). Also, transportation costs involved in some field experience assignments is the responsibility of the student.

Students graduate with an extensive body of skills. First, they are able to plan curriculum that is based on a thorough understanding of child development and implement individual programs and curriculum to meet the developmental needs of children. Centennial College grads also know how to utilize a variety of observation techniques to enhance work with children, families and co-workers. Another way of enhancing their work is through developing and maintaining effective written, oral, nonverbal and electronic children, families, co-workers, employers and individuals/agencies. This goes hand-in-hand with establishing and maintaining safe and heath environments that meet the requirements of current legislation, regulatory bodies and program policies, so that parents are assured their children are safe. psychology class question?

Compared to the time your parents were born, tell what advances came about to make your birth, childhood, education, ect. easier or harder for you. *This is a question I have to answer for my psychology class. Any ideas? Thank you.

Hmm. Good question for a psychology class. Since my parents were born (both in the 1920's) and my birth (1954) a lot has changed. IMO the changes that were good- not necessarily in order of importance: TV, better teachers, more advancement for women, more ownership of cars, frost-free refrigerators, central heating and air (all sorts of things to help housewives i.e washer,dryers), modes of travel to distant places, the polio vaccine and other medical advances.

IMO Changes for the worse: More crime and fear (they told me they didn't even lock their doors), we are not as near to our family distance wise, crummy TV, more uncommitted relationships, less time to spend with family and friends, peer pressure (of all ages), enjoyment of simple things.

All I can think of now. This is between 1920 and 1950's. From 1950's on... that is a different story! Hope this helps. I'm sure I will think of more later, but maybe this is a start. Good luck.

Reread this and changes to today- Ugh!. Better changes: Of course much better treatments for diseases and awareness of them, much more tolerance of minorities, convenience well, almost everything has become more convenient. More access to info (will put this in bad section as well), technological advances that allow for so so much i.e. using skype to person 6000 miles away for free, better medical diagnostic tools, advances into space, quicker output of goods, easier mundane chores such as Quick books and its uses, safer vehicles. List goes on and on.

Changes for worse: Too much information. Access to internet by inappropriately aged or people with mental health issues, children who can now see murders, all kinds of violence before the age of 10, myspace and all the horrible peer to peer insulting and of course the sexual predators, so many children of divorce with new moms, dads, siblings sometimes multiple times, too much emphasis on being thin and perfect, the outsourcing of jobs so that it is hard for Americans to get a decent paying job, quadrupled cost of living since 25 years ago (used to be double) As a middle-aged person, I can only imagine how this is going to effect the children in the future. I have already seen bad effects from the late 60's to now from the rapid divorce rate that occurred then. Can't slow down technology but it is harder and harder to have privacy and peace and quiet in many forms now.

Forgot the WORST- more nuclear weapons and in the hands of nut jobs. AND living with the fear of terrorism. I NEVER would have thought I would ever live to see the day we were blown up in our country by faceless people. I hate that my children will find it hard to remember when this was not a worry.
