In the United States, the towering Golden Gate Bridge is the oldest, longest, tallest single span bridge. The magnificent bridge is a unique bridge because of age and construction. Well, not quite right.

I know the Oakland hills are a zone of comfort, but Oakland, the downtown and the area around downtown, can seem to be a city of deserted buildings and houses with railings on windows. Trees, restaurants, and well-dressed people seem to be rare in many locations. The city tries hard, but is not even in the running for the good life.

My image is that on Sundays people in San Francisco jump into their cars to get out of the city for the day. They take the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito and spend the day in the restaurants and the shops. They eat crab at restaurants near the water. Then they walk around and buy a gadget or two at one of the many galleries. They stop for ice cream and eat their ice cream on a bench near the water. They watch the people fishing.

A good public relations campaign could link San Francisco with Berkeley, but Berkeley may not need the additional people or traffic.

Crossing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel Labor Day weekend?

Hello,
We'll be driving from the Boston area to the Outer Banks this weekend and are planning to cross the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel sometime Saturday. We're trying to figure out when to leave and we plan to drive straight through.

We'll hit the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel (what a mouthful) ten hours into the trip. We have considered leaving Friday night at 11pm - which would put us at the bridge at 9am. . . Or Saturday morning at 2am or so, which would put us on the bridge at noon.

What is the best time on a holiday weekend day (this Saturday) to be trying to cross the bridge? OR - will it really not be a big problem anyway?

It won't be an issue. It enters the Norfolk area from an extremely rural area. If you were crossing one of the other Norfolk area tunnels, I'd be worried but not that one.
