What does sterling mean in jewelry?

I kind of wanna buy this ring but it doesnt say silver just sterling it's 150 dollar so of course I don't wanna spend my money on something that will leave my finger green!

I want it to be authentic silver!

I believe sterling only stands for silver. There's no "sterling steel" or "sterling nickel" or what not. If it's marked sterling then it means sterling silver, which is a minimum of .925 pure silver. Is it just stamped "sterling", or is there a 925 stamp?

I know there are a lot of fraud and counterfeit crap in the precious metals and jewelery department. For example, especially on sites like eBay. If it's priced BELOW melt value, then YES it is almost 100% fake. There are tons of jewelery pieces that say "solid 18kt gold" that weight many grams, which if authentic would retail for thousands in gold weight. Yet these pieces are sold for under $100 despite the fact the sellers claim they are solid gold.

As far as silver goes, I'd imagine the counterfeit and fake jewelery is a lot less common. I mean, $150 in silver weight is approx 5 ounces of silver, that's a lot of silver. So even saying this ring is one ounce, that's a huge ring! Unless the ring has diamonds or gemstones that mark up the value, then $150 for silver is quite a lot. Chances are it's authentic. And if not, you can always take them to court as no one deserves to get away with scammers.
